Chorley + Bisset Ltd. is a mechanical and electrical consulting engineering company. Our company was established in London, ON, in 1973 by George Chorley and John Bisset. We have provided services for thousands of institutional, academic, industrial, and commercial building projects. Since 1973, we have worked hard to build our reputation for developing innovative and practical solutions to building system issues. Over the years we have cultivated strong relationships with major local institutions. We have over 40 years of experience with healthcare institutions such as London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph\u2019s Healthcare, and with educational institutions such as Western University and its affiliate colleges Brescia, King\u2019s, and Huron.<\/p>\n
In 2013, our company celebrated our 40th anniversary. Many of our engineers and staff have spent the majority of their careers with us, and we take pride in having employees who are committed to the principles and success of the company. Ownership of Chorley + Bisset is currently distributed among more than a dozen shareholders, all employees of the company. We believe ownership is strongly linked to the quality of our engineering services. A cornerstone of our ownership structure is the ongoing process of senior management succession, ensuring that the company\u2019s quality and culture have a broad base within the shareholder group.<\/p>\n

Ottawa Office<\/h3>\n
Our first project in Ottawa, the Steacie Superlab at Carleton University, was completed in 2007. The $3 million laboratory upgrade was the beginning of our professional relationship with the university, which has since grown to include a variety of new builds and renovation projects. We are currently working on several new construction projects, including the Sprott School of Business, the ARISE (Advanced Research and Innovation in Smart Environments) Building, and the Health Sciences Building.<\/p>\n
In 2015, we opened an office in Ottawa to serve Carleton University and seek other work in the capital region. The success of the new office has led to the need for additional space and team members. Our Ottawa office is now led by shareholder and associate Jeff Prevett (P. Eng.), assisted by two senior engineers from our London office and a senior mechanical designer. We are looking forward to further expanding the office in 2017.<\/p>\n

We are committed to minimizing the environmental footprint of the buildings we design. We actively help our Clients reduce their own environmental impact through construction of energy efficient sustainable buildings. All members of our design team are aware of the environmental impacts of their design decisions, and approach each project with methodologies that ensure sustainability and energy efficiency. We are committed to ensuring the systems we design are efficient, controllable, and maintainable, all of which will increase their sustainability. We ensure our staff are at the forefront of current sustainable design practices. For our own operations, we will strive to minimize our environmental impact by reducing our own energy use, and through the use of sustainably produced recycled consumables.<\/p>\n
LEED Certification<\/h3>\n
For more than four decades, Chorley + Bisset has been a leader in the field of building energy efficiency. We were one of the first Canadian consulting companies to use computerized building simulation to optimize energy efficiency. Our extensive experience with building energy management flowed readily into our current expertise with green building design. We provided the engineering services for the first three LEED buildings in the London area. The Sisters of St. Joseph London Residence project was the first LEED Gold certified project in the region, and its energy performance continues to exceed predictions. Our numerous subsequent LEED projects have all been large, complex buildings that required creative and innovative design approaches to achieve LEED certification. Most of our LEED projects have set the bar high \u2013 at the LEED Platinum and Gold levels.<\/p>\n

Bisset’s Best<\/h4>\n

Chorley + Bisset Consulting Engineers Engineering Award<\/h4>\n
Awarded annually to a full-time student in second or third year of engineering, alternating between the Mechanical and Materials Engineering program and the Electrical and Computer Engineering program. The recipient must have a minimum 75% average, demonstrated financial need, and show participation in extracurricular activities. This award was established by Chorley & Bisset Ltd. Consulting Engineers valued at $2,100. (During even years, a student in Mechanical and Materials Engineering will receive the award, and during odd years, a student in Electrical and Computer Engineering will receive the award.)<\/p>\n
Thames Valley Children’s Centre<\/h4>\n
Through sponsored canoe trips, George Chorley raised more than $250,000 for the Children’s Centre. Originally associated with the Bunny Bundle canoe trip, the annual event evolved into the Chorley\/Gonder canoe trip, a corporate fundraiser organized by George through the company.<\/p>\n

Our current staff size is 35. We have 12 registered Professional Engineers on staff, including 5 Designated Consulting Engineers. Seven of our senior staff are LEED Accredited Professionals. This high ratio of professionals to staff translates into the delivery of a particularly professional service to our clients. The senior management team, consisting of Robert Gordon, Dennis Dawe, Derek Vakaras, and Andrew Piatek, maintains a hands-on approach to the business. John Bisset remains active in the firm, mainly involved in special projects. Everyone on our management team is actively involved in engineering.<\/p>\n

Awarded annually to a full-time student in second or third year of engineering, alternating between the Mechanical and Materials Engineering program and the Electrical and Computer Engineering program. The recipient must have a minimum 75% average, demonstrated financial need, and show participation in extracurricular activities. This award was established by Chorley & Bisset Ltd. Consulting Engineers valued at $2,100. (During even years, a student in Mechanical and Materials Engineering will receive the award, and during odd years, a student in Electrical and Computer Engineering will receive the award.)<\/p>\n

Through sponsored canoe trips, George Chorley raised more than $250,000 for the Children’s Centre. Originally associated with the Bunny Bundle canoe trip, the annual event evolved into the Chorley\/Gonder canoe trip, a corporate fundraiser organized by George through the company.<\/p>\n

Our current staff size is 35. We have 12 registered Professional Engineers on staff, including 5 Designated Consulting Engineers. Seven of our senior staff are LEED Accredited Professionals. This high ratio of professionals to staff translates into the delivery of a particularly professional service to our clients. The senior management team, consisting of Robert Gordon, Dennis Dawe, Derek Vakaras, and Andrew Piatek, maintains a hands-on approach to the business. John Bisset remains active in the firm, mainly involved in special projects. Everyone on our management team is actively involved in engineering.<\/p>\n
We believe ownership is strongly linked to the quality of our engineering services. Ownership of Chorley + Bisset is currently distributed among more than a dozen shareholders, all of which are employees of the company.
